Posts from El Sauce

Home in El Sauce with los Berrios:

Last night, we arrived in El Sauce safely, no thanks to our crazy van drivers.

We all got situated in our respective homes.

I'm living with the Berrios family which is about a block away from the Cathedral and about a two minute's walk from the Geneseo office. Kellan was very helpful in terms of getting us used to navigating the unlabeled streets. The Saucenos are very friendly people and are more than willing to offer help when I get lost. :P

Sonia and Alberto, my host parents, are very kind and gave me a very warm welcome. I have yet to meet my host brother, but I think he mostly stays to himself. I was so exhausted that I fell asleep almost immediately.

My room is spacious. I have two beds, a cabinet for storing my clothes, a nightstand with a lamp, and a small bathroom nook complete with a sink, toilet, and shower. The house is simple, but clean and complete with all of the basics. I think my favorite part of the house is the garden in the small backyard. It's very open and refreshing. The berrios have a lora (parrot) and a pair of chickens, so the backyard can be a loud place, depending on the time of day.

Fortunately, the Berrios have a filtro (water filter) so I can drink the tap water here! That's great because I find myself constantly drinking from my Nalgene.

I brought an mosquito net with me, but I don't think I'll be needing it: the Berrios fumagate regularly and don't seem to have a problem with insects. Also, my room is well closed off. What a relief.

At night, we had dinner together as a group and met with PeaceCorps volunteers stationed in El Sauce. It was great to meet with Sauce's gringos all at once! (lol) We had a great time, though - everyone is easy going and I'm glad that we have such good group dynamics.
